The Story of Andy & Jane’s Dream of Moving to Spain

Published on 7 Aug 2025

After regularly visiting the area for 15 years, Andy and Jane finally made their long-time dream come true by moving to Málaga (along with their five cats) in 2023.

Where are you from and why did you decide to move to Spain?

We are from a town in the north of England called Wigan, which is situated between Manchester and Liverpool. We have been coming to Benalmadena for approximately fifteen years, the last six years in a holiday apartment we purchased. It has always been our dream to move to Spain when we retire, Jane has arthritis, and the weather helps with her condition.

When did you move & where in Spain did you settle? Did you move on your own or as a family?

We moved to Spain in the August and September 2023, Andys visa took a little longer. We moved with our five cats.

Did you use professional help for immigration procedures and/or any relocation services? Tell us your experience

We approached the solicitor who handled the purchase of our apartment to see if she could assist in our visa application. She could, so we decided to retain her services for that, in hindsight that wasn't a wise choice as later in the process it became apparent that she and her staff were not knowledgeable in the process.

How difficult was it to find your first home and do you still live in the same place?

We approached the realtor who helped us to find our apartment to assist in finding us a permanent home. We viewed quite a number of properties before we settled on our home in Campanillas, where we are still living.

What is your occupation in Spain? Has it changed compared to what you did in your home country?

We don't work in Spain, Andy took early retirement, and we use our apartment for holiday lets.

How integrated do you feel into the local community and lifestyle?

We are integrating more every day. We are taking Spanish lessons and that helps. It's amazing the difference if you attempt to speak Spanish, everyone responds positively to you if you make the effort.

Do you have any regrets about your move to Spain and/or miss anything from your home country?

No regrets, and the only things we miss are family and friends.

What was the main advantage and the main challenge you experienced with moving to Spain?

The main advantages are the weather and the more relaxed pace of life.
The main challenge has been dealing with procedures that we were unaware of or that were not explained to us by our solicitor.

Any advice you would like to give to those considering or in the process of moving to Spain

Do it, you won't regret it, but choose someone to help you who does that as their main occupation. Irina at Malaga Expat Consulting has been there to help us renew our visa, exchange Andys driving licence, and to deal with all the administration procedures in setting up our holiday rental.
